Many athletes dream of seeing themselves on the front cover of a Wheaties box, but few ever realize this dream. However, for Parker’s own Olympic gold medalist, Nastia Liuken, this dream came true. Liuken first saw the cereal box featuring herself at Kroger in Frisco during an autograph session last month.
Liuken’s parents, Valeri and Anna Liuken, were both Olympic gymnasts for the Soviet Union before coming to the United States and opening the Olympics Gymnastics Academy in Plano. The gym, which now has a branch in Frisco has become incredibly successful—producing the last two Olympic All-Around Gold Medalists, Carly Patterson and, of course, Nastia, who is coached by her father.
Since returning to the U.S. from the Beijing games in August, Liuken has only spent a handful of days at home as she has been touring throughout the country with the 2008 Tour of Gymnastics Superstars. However, during her short visits home, Nastia has enjoyed parades, parties, receptions and numerous autograph sessions in her honor.
In addition to being a world-class athlete, Nastia is also an exceptional student. She is fluent in both English and Russian, speaks limited Spanish and hopes to learn French at Southern Methodist University where she plans to study international business. Nastia has joked that she and teammate Alicia Sacramone, who is studying design at Brown, will open a clothing boutique together.
